Thanks Oprah!

I want to thank Oprah! Seems a little strange to be thanking someone for gaining weight but this is the truth. If you don't accept your new eating and exercise habits as your life from now on you will regain your weight.

The other reason I would like to thank Oprah is for her honesty in saying that she thought she knew the answer and then "kharma bit her in the butt". I have seen so many people stumble and never regain there momentum because they are embarrassed by being "one the newly converted", you know the type, they have THE ANSWER to your weight loss problems and they never stop telling you about it. Then suddenly they have fallen off the wagon and disappear, only to reappear looking a bit heavier and more embarrassed.

Oprah has no where to hide and this makes her weight loss progress, or lack there of, important. She is typical and regardless of personal chefs, trainers or anything else, weight loss is all about you. How you value your health, your time and how you accept the setbacks. And there will be setbacks. After years of supporting clients lose weight here are some of the things I have learned.

1) Initial success only comes after a number of attempts.

2) Relapses will happen. Realize these are not failures, but part of the process of lifelong change.

3) Plan ahead for difficult situations, whether it is vacations or stressful times at work. Have a back up plan. For example, if you can't get to the gym, go for a walk at lunch, just keep moving.

4) Reward yourself. Maintaining your current weight through difficult times and holidays is a success.

5) Find new coping strategies, food is fuel and should be enjoyable. It is not medicine or medication.

Sometimes the most important thing is knowing you are not alone, Thanks Oprah.
